5. Soften the edges
Modern pieces can go cold. Andrew
added softness to the master
bedroom,
left,
by hanging a white
curtain behind the upholstered
headboard. “Lighting above it gives
the drape a beautiful, luminous
quality,” he says.

. Scale back furniture
It’s easy for furniture to overwhelm
small rooms. Narrow-fitting
nightstands,
left,
and wall-mounted
sconces are the perfect fit. A
low-slung chaise,
below,
tucks under
an eave in the sitting room just off
the master. “The furniture is
slimmer in scale, which is ideal for
small spaces—
it’s not eating up the
whole room with arms and big
heavy skirts,” Andrew says. ffl

A SOFT TAKE ON MODERN
Touches of brown— in the furniture, carpets, and wood
floors— are a warm contrast with all-white walls.
■ Arched doorways and a few round pieces take the edge
off sleek lines.
■ Washable fabrics, such as nubby chenille and laid-back
linen, mean nothing is off-limits.
■ Spots of nature-inspired colors— yellow, green, blue, and
orange— add fresh energy without overwhelming.
